‘Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc and The Last of a Legend Arc’, the live action films made from the popular comics by Watsuki Nobuhiro, released the visuals of Shinomori Aoshi, acted by Iseya Yusuke, and Kashiwazaki Nenji, known as Okina, acted by Tanaka Min. These characters are among ‘Onmitsu Oniwaban-shu’, who play an important role in the films, who protected the royal castle Edo-jo till the end behind the scenes during the last days of the Tokugawa Shogunate. And their sublime action scenes are the highlights of these movies.
Iseya, who plays Aoshi, worked together with Dir Otomo in the TV drama ‘Shirasu Jiro’ and ‘Ryoma-den’, so this is the third time for him to work with Team Otomo. On the other hand, Tanaka, who has been successful as a dancer, also appeared in ‘Ryoma-den’ as Yoshida Toyo, so Team Otomo is familiar to him. We can place all the more expectation on their acting because both of them know the direction of Dir Otomo thoroughly.
Aoshi played by Iseya is set as the last head of ‘Onmitsu Edo-jo Oniwaban-shu’, which was once the direct subordinate of Shogun and is a particularly popular character in the original comics. Okina used to be feared as the most awful among the Edo-jo Oniwaban-shu. These old and new Oniwabans battle against each other for what each of them believes.
Action scenes in these films have been made far more powerful than the last one. So even Iseya, who had experienced harsh training for ‘Ashita-no Jo’, whined saying, ‘During the filming, I sometimes lost mobility in my legs but I’m moving ahead, feeling frustrated. Our action team aims an extremely high goal, so I barely catch up with them.’ Though Dir Otomo praises Tanaka for being ‘the strongest sixty-eight-old man in history’, says, ‘I suppose I’ll soon lose mobility, so I’m fighting very hard’ and is struggling to show his best action in his career in these films.
Among the new characters, the visual of Kamiki Ryunosuke as Seta Sojiro was already published and received positive reviews. And those of Aoshi and Okina published today are as good as that. A lot of fans must be looking forward to seeing how the two-parter will turn out to be, which will be the final episode in the live action films based on the ‘Kyoto Arc’, which is popular among the fans of the original comics.
